Keynote | The Pragmatic Cloud

Most enterprises today are no longer looking at the cloud as an emerging platform for limited use cases. The cloud is today’s reality. Whether it’s building a private cloud or utilizing multiple public cloud platforms, enterprises find that their scope is too large and their technologies are moving too fast – often their assumptions quickly becoming outdated. Although these tech leaders are constantly challenging their assumptions with thought provoking case studies, the reality of their strategy is often a little less exciting and a lot more pragmatic. This session will look at the practical considerations that are influencing modern cloud strategies including:

– Existing skill sets and technology limitations
– Assortment of current and future cloud workloads
– Economics and realities of today’s technology options

Breakout Sessions I

  1. Making Modern an Old Legacy: A Case Study

A New England insurance company had aging hardware, a database that was out of support, an older operating system, rising costs, and no disaster recovery plan. Craig Bogovich of NTT Data tackled this massive website backend, used by the company’s insureds, providers, and partners, and architected a complete overhaul, ultimately deploying it in the cloud. Learn how this case unfolded and how to replicate some of the strategies and methods used to modernize this legacy system with open source software and cloud technology.

Topics:  Strategy, Cloud, Database as a Service

  2. Less Bloat, Fewer Writes, and Just Plain Smaller — The Promise of zheap

PostgreSQL has advanced in terms of features, performance, and scalability for many core systems. However, one of the problems that many enterprises still complain about is bloat. Join this breakout session to discuss the ins and outs of a new solution in development for bloat, zheap. zheap is a new storage format in which only the latest version of the data is kept in main storage and the old versions will be moved to an undo log. Learn more and see the performance results of the prototype of this promising new storage format.

    Topics:  Community, Roadmap

    • Robert Haas

      Major Contributor to PostgreSQL

  3. Five Sharding Data Models and Which is Right

Whether you’re working with a distributed system or an MPP database, a key factor in the flexibility you get with the system is how you shard or partition your data. Do you do it by customer, time, or some random uuid? Join Craig Kerstiens, head of Cloud at Citus Data, and walk through five different approaches to sharding your data and learn when you should consider each one. If you’re thinking you need to scale beyond a single node, this will give you the start of your roadmap for doing so.

    • Craig Kerstiens

      Head of Cloud, Citus Data

  4. How to Consume Your Database Platform – On-Premises

A modern, cloud-native database platform brings so much flexibility and integration, without the contractual overhead of a proprietary database platform. You know that, since you’re at Postgres Vision. But the usual model for a database platform on-premises is to run it the way IT is usually operated – silo’d, capital- and labor- intensive. In the cloud, consumption means that you pay for what you use, with less heavy lifting to operate the platform. Find out how HPE can deliver EDB Postgres in a consumption model in your data center or on the Edge. Pay per use, elastic IT, operated for you, migrated and integrated.

Keynote | Disrupted: What Makes a Unicorn

Silicon Valley venture capitalists have a name for start-ups that achieve a valuation of more than $1 billion. They’re called “unicorns.” These hard-charging young companies generate massive wealth for investors – and they do it by wreaking havoc on bigger, more established rivals.

How do these Davids outcompete the Goliaths? What’s in their DNA that makes them special? What can we learn from them? Veteran tech journalist Dan Lyons reckoned the best way to crack the unicorn code was to work for one of these companies and experience start-up culture firsthand. This is a heartfelt talk about reinvention, innovation, and creativity, as well as a guide for how to survive – and even thrive – in an era of chaos and change.

Keynote | Data as the New Oil:
Industrializing Data Modernization

Managed well, data gives businesses a real competitive advantage. However, with the explosion of data in the past decade, the volume, variety, and velocity of data create new challenges. It is critical for organizations to adopt a database solution that is performant, resilient, and capable of handling massive amounts of polymorphic data. At the same time, organizations must drastically reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) to free up budgets for business transformation programs. Modernization should employ an industrialized methodology to drive the needed savings, but database migration/modernization at an industrial scale comes with its own set of risks and challenges. In this session, Infosys will present how it helps customers migrate to EDB PostgreSQL efficiently and effectively by leveraging its software plus services approach.
